Sometimes you hear a word but you don't take the time to explore fully exactly what it means probably. Well, we do here at Modern Art Quotes. Today's Word of the day is Spiritualism. Wiktionary defines the word as follows:
spiritualism
- A philosophic doctrine, opposing materialism, that claims transcendency of the divine being, the altogether spiritual character of reality and the value of inwardness of consciousness.
- A belief that the dead communicate with the living through a medium having special powers.
Spiritualism often refers to the practice of communicating with spirits; although my personal definition is much more general, and matches the first definition from above, "...that claims transcendency of the divine being,...". Basically I don't just believe, I know that the soul is real, and eternal. At least more eternal than this physical body. I know this to be true from various experiences I have had over the course of my life, including; dreams, waking experiences, and intentional and unintentional movement of the soul body, (moving separately from the physical body). But to close this Word of the Day entry, let me quote Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; from his The History of Spiritualism:
